Ok so I know that I can drive with my Canadian license for 1 year in Sweden. Then I have to take the written and practical test to get myself a Swedish license.
Like most Canadians, I've always driven an automatic transmission car. I read on the Vägverket that they can tag your license that restricts you to drive only cars with an automatic transmission. Does this have to do with the kind of car you drive when you take the test?
I have been learning how to drive a manual transmission car but I would feel much better doing the test in a car with an automatic transmission. But I don't want to get some restricted license.
Anyone with experience of getting their drivers license in Sweden is welcomed to share all the hoops they've had to jump through.

Awww... that's so cute! My dad tried to practice driving with me and it ended with us driving home in angry silence.

When I took my test in Luleå, I had enrolled at a local school to use their computers and have access to past theory tests. The tests give you a good idea of what's to come and because I had driven in Canada for so long, the few hundred SEK to use the computers and not do the practical was well worth the money.
Another thing, the practical test, which I did on a manual, was easy for me. The gentleman from Vägverket saw that I had experience behind the wheel and was really nice to me. I was nervous, but 20 years driving experience and he wasn't too demanding. I learned manual in Montreal (from a very nice friend who let me scrape his gears a few times, whoops!) and then perfected it in Luleå on an old Volvo 240 from 1987. I would never go back to automatic. I love manual.

Are the tests available in English (I heard rumours that they were). Actually here in Canada for the winter and getting back all my 'ice driving' experience. Been up and down the Coquihala a half dozen time already.
On a side note, finally got a parking spot in our building in Goteborg.....$120/month Ouch!!! Also had been on the 'list' since last spring!!

Did you know that Sweden is the one and only country in EU to ask a canadian driver to pass the test again ?
The reverse situation (Swedes) in Canada can just have their driving license exchanged without any problem... Canada acept EU members to exchange their license if they move to Quebec for example (I got the information from the "Ministère des transports du Québec".
While all the people from let say... Spanish from "Costa del sol" that never seen snow of their life can have their swedish license if they move here.... (EU Rules).
I think that there is a way to make the Sweden change their rules but someone must disagree and fight back...

Even ppl. from Japan can exchange their drivers here in Sweden, being that their from an Island don't they drive on the left hand side??? I know my husband (who drives extensively with work) ... does not like the idea of drivíng on the left side.

Finally going for my Swedish drivers license. I spoke with a driving school here, and it's pretty expensive. I was quoted almost 8000 sek for an 'intensive' 2 week course in Falkenburg, and it's actually cheaper than another school (10500 sek). I've been driving for about 30 years, it seems like allot (also allot of experience on manual). How much did it cost you so far? Just would like another opinion.

Haven't taken it yet. Just got the books right so far. Next test available at the school I'll be going through (in Falkenburg) is in mid Aug. Sucks that I have to do the classes, and wet/slippery driver training when I have almost 30 years driving exp with no accidents and minimal (<3) speeding tickets in BC and Calif. On a funny note, I told the instructor I was from Canada, and she said 'sorry we can't train you, because we don't have any automatic transmission cars'. Guess someone didn't tell her that standard transmission cars are sold in North America too.

Passed the driving too. Was kinda funny. I told the driving tester 'min svenska är inte så bra, kan vi prata englska?'. She said 'nej, det är bra.', and motioned out with hand signals 'höger', 'vanster', and pointed straight and said 'ingenting'. I got nervous. She asked if I had a licence in another country (in Swedish), and I said 'Canada since 1980'. After driving for 10 minutes, following her hand signals, she started chatting away with my driving instructor (sitting in the back seat). After a while she directed me back to their compound, while still chatting away, and had me park. She brought out her checklist and quickly checked off boxes and said to me 'godkänd'. Kinda anti-climactic. Guess I got a great driving tester, and saw it was a formality, hehe.

Does anyone needs a Korkortsboken in english? Please let me know (believe me I wanna get rid of this damn book, hehe). It's in pretty good shape, but it has some underlining and comment in the margins, but it's free (well just postage).
